July 12, 2017
Congratulations to the Bellair Barracudas for winning their seventh straight Desert Swim League Championships!
Equally important however, congratulations go out to all teams that competed in this year's championships.
Thanks too all ten teams, parents, volunteers, etc..., for being part of the Desert Swim League. We couldn't do this without your continued support.
Thanks. Brian Metheny/Maynard Keenan

We are almost there. The weather forecast for next week, as of Friday PM, is (it keeps changing):
Mon 105, 20% rain partly cloudy
Tue: 107, 0% rain partly cloudy
Wed: 107, 0% rain partly cloudy
Now, we all know how the weather changes in the Phoenix area. We go through this almost every year and somehow we get the meet completed. So, we will keep our fingers crossed.
In the event weather causes a cancellation, a coach from each team needs to make contact with Brian to see what the next day's schedule will be.
My cell number is - 602 410 0200.
Call me and I will give a yes or no. Keep in touch with your coaching staff!
Unfortunately, Ski Pro will not be at our meet this year due to a very busy summer schedule. So, championship t-shirts will not be available.
The golf course is generally closed on Monday, so there should not be an issue with parking. Tuesday and Wednesday are normal golf days. However, if there are parking restrictions, please follow their instructions. Please do not arrive before 2:30 each day. Remember, we are their guests. Take a deep breath and think about it before a negative comment is made.
Each coach should have a Day 1 and Day 2 schedule. Make copies for your members as we will not have extras.
Bring lots of water, sunscreen, hats, and whatever is needed to protect yourself from the sun.
Clean up when you leave.
Each team should provide at least one timer. Two would be helpful. We always need timers. Movie passes will be given to those that stay all three days.
This year we had a lot more problems with entries than in the past years. Make sure you thank Courtney for the adjustments.
Hubbard FSS and Arrowhead were the only teams that didn't have entry problems. Courtney and I thank you.
Thanks for being part of the DSL.
Thanks. Maynard Keenan

A rather serious situation occurred at Arrowhead last Thursday, July 15, 2017. PLEASE READ the following!
FYI - To all DSL Swim Teams - Please read the email below very carefully (read between the lines) and try to understand the potential concerns we could have in future scheduling at Arrowhead CC.
I responded to Nick, Arrowhead CC, on behalf of the DSL. I didn't know what to say except, I was truly sorry this happened and I would send this out to all members. Needless to say, this is serious and it could jeopardize future events at Arrowhead. Unfortunately, I don't have any details, parent(s)/swim team(s). Teams swimming on this date, Thursday, June 15, were: Anthem, Bellair, Vistancia, and Arrowhead.
This is a relationship we can't afford to lose. We are their guests and must follow their rules. Arrowhead has been more than generous over the past many, many years allowing us to use their facility for Championships. I always have a Plan B in place, but changing championships would be a major adjustment.
Thanks. Maynard Keenan

From Nick, tough night last night with the some club issues.
Coach Chris
Chris
I wanted to bring to your attention a couple of items to possibly send to Maynard and see if he can send out an email to all teams to address some things.
Rather than a long winded email, I will try and keep this short to get to the point but basically we need an email sent out reminding all teams that when they are on our property, there are rules that need to be followed. Between the abuse Patrick and I take doing parking control, to the ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE treatment that Maggie and her team received from one or two visitors (they went as far as calling her a Bitch to her face), to the blatant disregard for all the other events (restaurant and private event with a big client of ours) it all needs to be addressed.
Last night was tough all around! Please understand I recognize your team, my team, and our F&B/Catering team worked extremely hard last night, and every night, to make this as good of an experience for guests as we do our members, but I think this time it unfortunately fell so far outside our control, that it needs to be addressed directly with the Swim League so that they are aware.
Please let me know if you need any further details or would like me to email Maynard myself to explain the situation. Again understand this is in no way reflection of you or your team. Thanks!

6/20 MEET CANCELLED 6/20 MEET CANCELLED 6/20 MEET CANCELLED
The DSL has officially CANCELLED all swim meets for Tuesday, June 20, due to the excessive heat warning projected through Wednesday, June 21. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 120 range for Tuesday.
Unless there is a change in the weather for Thursday, June, 22, (projected temperature, 114) all meets will go ahead as scheduled.

Based on some of the weather forecasts for next week, especially Tuesday, June 20, (temperature maybe 120), make sure all swimmers/parents don't feel obligated or required to attend any swim meets. We don't need any health issues related to the heat. Remember, it is only swim. As usual, it is their decision. At this point, we are not going to cancel any meets, however I will review this again on Sunday, June 18 (Father's Day), and send out another email.
At this time, I am not concerned about the meet this Thursday, June 22. It is still a go.

Membership invoices have been sent out.
The Anthem Meet, Thursday, July 6 - All events will be 25 m - Diving is ok at both ends - Swimmers can swim all four events plus the relay if they wish - Relays will be Freestyle 4 x 25 m - Two relay teams per age group, per gender - Ribbons will be awarded to all swimmers. More later.

Updated 5/25/17
School is out or soon too be, Memorial Day is this weekend (have a safe one and ALWAYS THANK A VET), and swim starts next Thursday, 6/1.
Some more thoughts:
1. When a heat is finished, instruct all swimmers to remain in the water until an official tells them to exit. We need to establish consistency. Plus, it is the courteous thing to do.
2. Start and finish lines - This space is often times limited and usually crowded, but let's try to keep this area clear. Our swimmers, coaches, timers need space. Work on it and it will eventually work itself out. Tell parents to stand on the side. We will take care of their kids.
3. Wellness - If kids are sick, don't let them swim.
4. Kinesio/KT tape - Response I received from the AIA - Kinesio tape is not allowed in any AIA Swimming competition.(3.3.4 and AIA Policy) It is a compressive, and compressives are banned, because they affect an athlete's performance. More so, We are concerned with the swimmer's health and safety, and encourage an injured swimmer to heal their injury, rather than risk further injury by swimming with tape.
5. Jewelry - Response I received from the AIA - Jewelry is allowed to be worn.(3.3.5) The restrictions on jewelry were removed before last year's (2016) season. We do, in fact, encourage swimmers with disability bracelets to wear them, in case a situation arises. If the jewelry is loose, it is to the swimmers advantage to tape the jewelry to their body so as to avoid entanglement in lane lines, etc. Swimmers are responsible for any lost jewelry.

Mother's Day is May 14. DON"T FORGET!
Some additional reminders.
1. We are less than a month away from starting (June 1).
2. Ribbons - Remember the arrangement. 1. take your own ribbons 2. exchange with the other team (home and home meets) 3. pay the host team, $ 1.50 per swimmer (this covers three events per meet and helps cover other pool expenses, aka, lifeguards).
3. I will send out membership invoices in early June.
4. PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE - Don't enter kids if they can't CONSISTENTLY swim 25 yards. Assuming they can swim freestyle and are not legal for the other strokes, I, (Bellair), will allow those kids to swim additional freestyle races (outside lane) to get their three ribbons. See me and we can work out any combination of legal vs not legal. Our goal is to finish by 8:30 PM.
5. Disqualifications - Our season is somewhat shorter this year due to how the dates of Memorial Day and July 4 fall. We need to start the DQ process June 1. Better now than during championships. Coaches need to pay close attention to their swimmers at all times as I can't keep track/remember the DQ's once several races have past. We will still give out last place ribbons.
6. Parking can be challenging at some pools, so be considerate of how you park (driveways, fire hydrants, corners,... etc).
7. Each home team needs to provide a place for the visiting team(s) to sit.
8. Meets start at 6 PM - warm ups for the home team is 5 PM - visiting team(s) warm up at 5:30 PM.
9. Make sure swimmers and parents are aware of the new minimum times for championships (no surprises).
10. Also post dates for championships, held at Arrowhead - July 10, 11, 12 (MTW).
11. Food - By law, food is not allowed on deck. Although we get away with it, be careful and mindful. Don't be careless.
12. Some pools have lifeguards. Be observant and give them space.
13. Visiting teams - help out the host team and pick up when leaving.
14. Welcome all new coaches. You are going to like this league.

To all DSL Swim Coaches: Remember - The Desert Swim League (DSL) is a summer competitive sprint swim league. COMPETITIVE!
The DSL is NOT SWIM LESSONS! We are a competitive swim league. If individual teams want to conduct swim lessons at their location, that is their business. The DSL does not dictate how the member teams conduct their operation as long as they follow DSL Rules and Procedures. Kids that can’t consistently swim 25 yards/meters are absolutely not to be entered into any DSL Swim Meet. Kids that are not legal to swim a designated stroke(s) are not to be entered into that race(s). Coaches must make sure all parents are aware of this procedure from the start. We will make every attempt to see that each kid swims three races, even if they are all freestyle, as long as they are legal. Coaches must communicate with visiting coaches to find out what additional numbers/races need to be scheduled. Coaches – you are held accountable. 3/7/17 MK I am extremely disappointed at the events that have taken place over the past few days regarding this web site. Someone has gone in and deleted pertinent information. I have my suspicions, but at this point it really doesn't matter, as Bellair will have a swim team for 2017. A swim team committee has been formed consisting of several members of the Bellair Board of Directors and some Bellair parents. All questions should be directed to that committee or AZCMS. The Bellair office will be able to give you those contact numbers. 2/1/17 Maynard Keenan

The DSL has established a minimum time standard for all strokes and the IM in order to qualify for Championships. Go to the DSL Tab on this site to see those standards. It's the .xls file. Times are subject to change yearly (this year's times are slightly slower than 2015), so make sure all swimmers and parents know the minimum qualifying times for championships. No surprises!
Once again...Championships will be on MTW - July 11th, 12th, 13th at Arrowhead CC.
